I’m the Red Light Display concierge. First session is usually a 15-minute full-screen session — sit about 6 inches if comfortable (or 30 cm / 18 in), brightness 100%, Night Shift, True Tone, and Invert Colors off. If you need to keep working, use the red filter instead. I will not diagnose or treat anything. When you’re ready, go to /download.
Retail aisle vs this Mac.
The $23–45 Amazon/Walmart aisle is already sold as red light therapy. We match that session recipe — 10–15 minutes, sit 6–18 inches, daily, visible red, same wellness disclaimer. We beat those bulbs on treated area and a controlled full-field red. We do not claim this Mac beats a measured 50+ mW/cm² panel on irradiance.
As good as the cheapest aisle
- The $23–45 Amazon/Walmart aisle is already sold as “red light therapy” with timers, hang-distance folklore, and the same “not intended to diagnose, treat, cure, or prevent any disease” line we use.
- We match that session recipe: 10–15 minutes, sit 6–18 inches, daily, visible red — the Hooga HG24 protocol, not a clinic protocol.
- A 16-inch Liquid Retina XDR class panel is a face-sized field, much larger than a $23 USB 96-LED lamp or a $45 ~13 sq in bulb.
- The Mac gives a controlled full-field Maximum Red (Display P3, published dominant 614.9 nm in the 600–700 nm window) instead of an unmeasured USB or hang lamp with no drive software.
- We do not claim this display beats a measured 50+ mW/cm² panel (Bestqool ~51.7, Mito/Joovv ~56–73) on irradiance. The ≈0.2–0.3 mW/cm² glass figure is calculated, not measured.
Cheap aisle vs this Mac vs a measured panel

|---|---|---|---|
| Price to start | $23–60 for a new lamp | App on a Mac you already own (free session / $9.99 Pro) | $250–350 (Bestqool Pro100) |
| Session recipe | 10–15 min, ~6–18 in, daily | 10 / 15 min, 6–18 in, daily, plus a red filter | Same consumer clock; higher measured irradiance |

| Near infrared | Often labeled 850 nm | None — a display cannot emit 850 nm | 850 nm class, often dual-chip |
| Irradiance | Almost never published; Hooga claims 80 mW/cm² at 6 in (unverified; category pattern is ~half of claims) | ≈0.2–0.3 mW/cm² at the glass as full-field red (calculated, not measured); ≈0.11 mW/cm² at 6 in; ≈0.05 mW/cm² at 30 cm. 15 min at 6 in ≈0.10 J/cm² — about 1/40 of 4 J/cm². | Bestqool Pro100: 51.7 mW/cm² avg at 6 in (Light Therapy Insiders) |
| Treated area | USB lamp or ~13 sq in bulb; small spot | Face-sized ~16 in field — larger than the $23–45 bulbs | Tabletop / torso zone, not full body |
| Control | On/off, maybe a timer; no calibrated field | Full-field Maximum Red, 15-min session, red filter, Escape exits | Modes / timer; still a dedicated extra rectangle |

Cheap aisle
USB 5V 96-LED 660 nm lamp — ~$22.90
Small USB beauty lamp. Session: Wellness folklore: sit close, minutes on a timer. No official protocol published with the listing.
Claims: Skin brightening · Sleep · Yoga.
Versus this Mac: Same “red light therapy” label and disclaimer. Tiny field, no irradiance, no software-driven full-field red.
45W 225-LED 660/850 hang panel — ~$39
12.2 in square hang panel (ASIN B09YMH575B). Session: Hang ~30 cm. Category clones say 10–25 min. No spectrometer.
Claims: Skin · Circulation · Sleep · Comfort / muscle joint.
Versus this Mac: Comparable board size to a laptop lid, but no published irradiance and no controlled full-field drive. We do not claim a brightness win over this panel.
Hooga HG24 — ~$45
24 W E26/E27 bulb, 12 dual-chip LEDs. Session: Official: 2–15 min, 6–18 inches, daily.
Claims: Home wellness routine · Targeted sessions.
Versus this Mac: This is the recipe we copy (time, distance, daily, disclaimer). We beat the bulb on treated area and a controlled full-field red. We do not adopt the 80 mW/cm² claim.
Walmart floor / Rebelduck lamps — ~$50–60
Floor or stand lamp, 120–160 LEDs. Session: Sit in front of the lamp. No spectrometer, no published fluence.
Claims: Beauty · Relaxation · Skin care.
Versus this Mac: Same aisle, same missing irradiance. A laptop field is larger and software-timed.
Mid / measured
Bestqool Pro100 — $250–350
Tabletop / half-body panel, 100 dual-chip LEDs. Session: Consumer 10–20 min at working distance. Measured irradiance is in the dermatologic LED band.
Claims: Recovery / wellness panel.
Versus this Mac: This is the honesty line: a measured ~52 mW/cm² tabletop is in a different irradiance class than a laptop estimate. We do not claim to beat it on mW/cm².
Expensive
MitoPRO 300X — $449
Small branded panel. Session: Brand 10–20 min programs at a published working distance.
Claims: Branded home panel.
Versus this Mac: Different product class on price and measured-or-branded irradiance. We do not claim a laptop match.
MitoPRO 1500X — $1,299
Large branded panel. Session: Brand 10–20 min programs.
Claims: Branded home panel.
Versus this Mac: Price and irradiance class we do not claim to beat.
Joovv Solo 3.0 — ~$1,699
Single modular panel. Session: Brand timed sessions at a working distance.
Claims: Premium modular panel.
Versus this Mac: Independently measured ~59 mW/cm². We do not claim the Mac reaches that.
Joovv Elite 3.0 — $11,099
6-panel full-body system. Session: Brand full-body timed sessions.
Claims: Full-body system.
Versus this Mac: A different object. Coverage and claimed irradiance are not a laptop comparison.
This Mac
16-inch class built-in display, full-field red + desktop red filter. 15-min flagship (also 10 / 20). Sit 6–18 inches. Daily. Red filter while you work.
This is the product. We match the cheap-aisle recipe and beat those bulbs on area and control. We do not claim we beat measured 50+ mW/cm² panels on irradiance.
